Cylburn Arboretum Baltimore Maryland Wedding

John + Sabriya

We all love a good wedding trend, way to infuse the “here and now” of our society with the stone-set moments of wedding day. The modern wedding with white dresses, wedding vendors and elaborate ceremonies and receptions all began after the second world war and has been a staple of modern society since. Wedding days since then have changed with the times but have all followed a similar playbill since the 1980’s: ceremony, vows, reception. Couples are choosing to find ways to break the mold of the modern wedding but also following traditions that define what a wedding is. The ironic thing about new “trends” are that some people may consider this trending thing to not be new at all but something they did, experienced or have memories of themselves (like bell bottom jeans or overalls with one buckle unclipped, but that’s a topic for another day).

John and Sabriya chose a wedding “trend” that was deeply meaningful and important to them and they did it all at the Cylburn Mansion and Arboretum in Baltimore, Maryland. Their “jumping of the broom” trend was tied to slavery-era American history where slaves jumped over a flat laying broom to seal their wedding vows and although it may not have been as elaborate as internet video trends, it was a moment they wanted. Sabriya’s details were also rooted in her history and culture; a locket with the memory of her mother and a birdcage veil from the 1930’s. Their venue as well was set on historical land with their morning prep occurring in the Cylburn Mansion that was built in 1863 and ceremony in the garden.

If you’re looking to add a trend to your wedding, my first recommendation is to always do something that represents you or do something you’ll want to remember forever. My second recommendation is always to let your photo and video team know about it so they can strategize how to best capture it. Here are a few trends that I like that are easy, memorable and provide a bit of uniqueness to your wedding day:

  • Rounded ceremony: Break away from the traditional aisle setup by arranging your ceremony in the round. This intimate setting allows your guests to encircle you, creating a more inclusive and connected atmosphere.

  • Incorporate your pets: If you're a pet-loving couple, include your furry friends in the ceremony. They could serve as ring bearers, flower pets, or even walk you down the aisle. Just ensure they're comfortable and safe in the environment.

  • Disposable cameras: Wedding guest books are out. Having disposable cameras are in! Have your guests take photos all night and get them developed for a surprise.
